Hutong Life

Ludovica Anzaldi has made this photographic report (made in film 35mm with a Canon AT-1) in Beijing, China. She decides to show us the old, traditional part of the city: the Hutong districts, namely focusing on Beixingiao, in the city centre. Through her pictures, she tells us about that simple life that still exists in those few districts, surrounded by the new Beijing, made of huge skyscrapers, offices and department stores. In those districts, children are still free to play down the street, where women hand their laundry outside of their houses and men get shaved calmly in the street. In this report, the photographer discloses some glimpses of “tradition” in an already too modern city: the old life in a city which has changed with the times.
